The Carol of the Bells

Did you know that Shchedryk is the most famous Ukrainian song? Its English version is called Carol of the Bells.

There's a Wikipedia article devoted to this song which says it was composed by Ukrainian composer Mykola Leontovych in 1914 on the basis of the Ukrainian folk song. English lyrics were written by Peter J. Wilhousky in 1936.

Perhaps you remember hearing it while watching Home Alone.

Lyrics:
Hark how the bells,
sweet silver bells,
all seem to say,
throw cares away
Christmas is here,
bringing good cheer,
to young and old,
meek and the bold,
Ding dong ding dong
that is their song
with joyful ring
all caroling
One seems to hear
words of good cheer
from everywhere
filling the air
Oh how they pound,
raising the sound,
o'er hill and dale,
telling their tale,
Gaily they ring
while people sing
songs of good cheer,
Christmas is here,
Merry, merry, merry, merry Christmas,
Merry, merry, merry, merry Christmas,
On on they send, on without end,
their joyful tone to every home
Ding dong ding ding... dong! (Once again)

Talking about fashion

Do you know what are the right names for different hat models? Can you explain what kind of shoes you are looking for? If you are not sure, then here's some help.

In this video you will see the examples of the following hats: homburg hat, trilby hat, fedora hat, bowler hat, pork pie hat, deerstalker, cowboy hat, ivy cap, newsboy cap, beret (or French beret), bucket hat, panama hat, boater hat, bumper brim hat, pillbox hat, cloche (bell) hat, mushroom hat, vagabond hat, floppy hat, cartwheel hat, Breton hat, fascinator hat.

Now check yourself. What hats are the members of Radiohead wearing in this collage? British fashion rules :)

Here's a great article about the place of a bowler hat in British fashion if you want some extra reading on the topic.

At the previous lesson we also had a problem with types of shoes. So, here's Justine talking about them.

In this video you will see the following types of shoes:
Flat shoes: gladiators, ballerinas, moccasins, loafers, Mary Jane’s, mules, slingsbacks.
Heels: ankle-strap heels, kitten heels, stilettos, scarpins, killer heels, platform heels, wedges, chunky heels, peeptoes heels.
Boots: Chelsea boots, cowboy boots, knee-high boots, thigh-high boot.
And at the end: peeptoe Mary Jane heels and peeptoe platform slingback heels.

After watching please, let me know what kind of shoes and hats you prefer. Looking forward to your comments.

Weather Song for Primary School

Knowing weather vocabulary is extremely important for future primary teachers as pupils of 2nd and 3rd forms are already familiar with basic words and expressions. Discussing weather at the lesson can be boring but there are ways to make it fun such as using songs with movements. For example, "The Sun comes Up".

Education in Ukraine - Summary

This term my fourth-year students have been mastering the art of presentation while learning to speak about Ukrainian educational system. This involved not only working with vocabulary and texts but also structuring information in a logical way, so the first step was to create a mind map. Then much time was devoted to developing speaking skills on the topic.
Here are the examples of the student's works: the PowerPoint slides were used as clues while delivering a speech.

Education in Ukraine from Natalia Zavgorodnia

Some students were brave enough to record their voice and actually succeeded in making a video.

A School Day in Britain

We have already learnt how to speak about educational system in our country in English. Now it's time to compare it with those of English-speaking countries. Watch the video about a day in the life of a common British schoolboy and answer the question: How does it differ from Ukraine?

Now watch again and write down the time for the following parts of the school day:
- registration
- the first lesson
- the second lesson
- lunch
- the third lesson
- hometime
What did you notice about the length of the lessons? What is the reason for this difference?

Environment Protection - summary

We are rounding up the topic "Environmental Protection" this week. Lots of new vocabulary have been learnt. Many current problems have been discussed such as pollution, global warming, greenhouse effect, rare and vanishing species, deforestation, etc. Many facts have been discovered while searching the internet for environmental issues information (and your retweets are the evidence). The conclusion we've come to is frightening: all humanity is to blame for this disaster that is happening.
This recently released video introduces the new BBC series "Blue Planet II". Watch it and admire the astonishing beauty of the Earth which may disappear one day if we don't take care of it.

Please, share your impressions and thoughts in the comments.
And here is the story of our Twitter activity. Thanks to all the students who participated.

Six Honest Serving Men by R.Kipling

Rudyard Kipling described the question words as six honest serving men in his poem Six Honest Serving Men at the end of the story The Elephant’s Child. This poem is a tribute to a child's curiosity.

I keep six honest serving-men
(They taught me all I knew);
Their names are What and Why and When
And How and Where and Who.
I send them over land and sea,
I send them east and west;
But after they have worked for me,
I give them all a rest.
I let them rest from nine till five,
For I am busy then,
As well as breakfast, lunch, and tea,
For they are hungry men.
But different folk have different views;
I know a person small-
She keeps ten million serving-men,
Who get no rest at all!
She sends ’em abroad on her own affairs,
From the second she opens her eyes-
One million Hows, two million Wheres,
And seven million Whys!
Here's the poem presented by Yevheniia Pidlisna, the student of Pokrovsk Pedagogical Professional College.
