The Carol of the Bells

Did you know that Shchedryk is the most famous Ukrainian song? Its English version is called Carol of the Bells.

There's a Wikipedia article devoted to this song which says it was composed by Ukrainian composer Mykola Leontovych in 1914 on the basis of the Ukrainian folk song. English lyrics were written by Peter J. Wilhousky in 1936.

Perhaps you remember hearing it while watching Home Alone.

Lyrics:
Hark how the bells,
sweet silver bells,
all seem to say,
throw cares away
Christmas is here,
bringing good cheer,
to young and old,
meek and the bold,
Ding dong ding dong
that is their song
with joyful ring
all caroling
One seems to hear
words of good cheer
from everywhere
filling the air
Oh how they pound,
raising the sound,
o'er hill and dale,
telling their tale,
Gaily they ring
while people sing
songs of good cheer,
Christmas is here,
Merry, merry, merry, merry Christmas,
Merry, merry, merry, merry Christmas,
On on they send, on without end,
their joyful tone to every home
Ding dong ding ding... dong! (Once again)

  1. This song is my favorite song on the Christmas theme. On the eve of the new year in my head is constantly spinning this song. Decorating the Christmas tree, watching home alone movie where you hear the English equivalent of the beloved Ukrainian song. good to know that the creativity of Ukrainian composers, touches the hearts of people far beyond the country.
