Tips for Writing a Film Review


If you need to write a successful film review, stick to the following layout:

1. Introduction.
Provide some basic information about the film. Define the genre, say where and when it is set and give some background.

This  historical drama was released on ... . It is set in ... and is about ... .
2. The plot.
Briefly mention some of the main events – don`t go into details. Use present tenses.

The story is ... (exciting/ gripping/ predictable/ boring. It is based on the idea ... .
3. The actors, characters and dialogue.
Evaluate the performance of the characters. Comment on the script and dialogue.

The cast was perfect/ all-star/ ... Everybody remembers... 
... and ... star in this film. The episodic part of... by ... is unforgettable. However, the performance of ... is not so good/ weak/ unconvincing. 

4. Special features - special effects, soundtrack, location, scenes, costumes.
Evaluate the filming, locations, costumes. Mention one specific scene if you wish.

It is worth mentioning that... . The music for the film was composed by ... .The locations are ... (beautiful/ spectacular), and the costumes are ... (realistic/ beautiful).

5. Conclusion.
Finish with a brief comment and make a recommendation.

To sum up, ... . The film is a must-see. I would definitely recommend you to watch it.
