My Watching Suggestions

I often give my students the advice to listen to the native speakers of English as much as possible. I did it at least twice this week - first when we discussed the formation of listening comprehension skills at the lecture and then during a lively spontanious discussion in class about improving pronunciation. So I wondered if they usually follow it and do as I say having a wide range of possibilities at their hands. And I also thought that one can get lost in the amount of available videos on the Internet and that English learners may need a guide in the world of English-speaking Youtubers.

I personally think that watching vlogs and following British native speakers is a good idea both if you want to improve your English systematically and if your goal is to brush up the language from time to time. You can also learn a lot about the culture and the lifestyle.

As the Halloween vibes are still in the air I chose the videos which can give you the idea what place this traditinal holiday takes in the lives of common British people.

Video 1

Watch how British fashion blogger Emma Hill gets ready for Halloween - she and her husband Simon visit the pumpkin patch to buy pumpkins (see how long the queue is there - they say that queuing is a British tradition :) Pay attention how much the British love their dogs.

Video 2

This one is a tutorial how to make a Halloween pumpkin display. The British like DIY projects when it comes to decorating home for a holiday. Pay attention how Debs pronounces some words with the sound [ʌ] - it's actually [ʊ], this accent is common for the north of England.

I hope you didn't find the suggested videos too difficult. It's OK if you don't understand every word, just try to get a general idea. Let me know in the comments if you want me to post such watching suggestions from time to time.

Learn the phonetic alphabet in 4 steps

As we start the school year lots of students have difficulties with reading transcription of the words. It's a very necessary skill which helps to find out the pronunciation of a certain word in the dictionary. To master it you must learn the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA), a system where each symbol is associated with a particular English sound.

Learn the phonetic alphabeth in 4 steps

Step 1. Watch the video, listen to the pronunciation of each symbol and repeat after the speaker.

Step 2. Use Interactive Phonemic Chart to practise reading the phometic symbols. The chart is clickable so you can click on each symbol or a sample word to hear. Work like this:

Step 3. Practise transcribing online. On the following page you'll find the section "Transcribe words to and from phonetics". Start with the words which pronunciation you are familiar with.

How do you spell your name?

This information is for those students who are not sure how to spell their name or surname in English.

There are special rules of transliteration (transcribing a word in one alphabet into corresponding letters of another alphabet) for Ukrainian proper names.

Irish Souvenirs

Our college is going to participate in the local celebration of the Day of Europe which will take place in May. We are proud to represent Ireland, a country with an ancient culture and rich traditions. This information is for those of my students who are in charge of souvenir production.

День Європи в Україні відзначають у третю суботу кожного травня. Другий рік поспіль Покровський педагогічний коледж буде приймати участь у його святкуванні, представляючи Ірландію.

Наше завдання - познайомити усіх присутніх на святі з культурою та традиціями цієї європейської країни. Пропоную Вашій увазі інформацію про символи Ірландії та ідеї для сувенірної продукції.

Зелений колір

Перший і найвідоміший символ - це зелений колір (green colour). Недарма на День святого Патрика ірландці одягають зелене, бо це їх національне свято. Будь-яка зелена прикраса - це вже ірландський сувенір. Наприклад, ось такі сережки.

Конюшина

Всім відомо, що рослиною-символом цієї країни є конюшина - shamrock. Конюшина є гарним мотивом для оздоблення різноманітних прикрас. Наприклад, заколок для волосся.

У формі конюшини можна виготовити наступні сувеніри:

- брошки або брелоки з бісеру

- бант-трилисник

- в'язані шарфи

- кулони з фетру

- кулони з дроту

Кельтский вузол

У кельтскькій міфології такі вузли символізували священну геометрію всесвіту та взаємозв"язок всього живого на землі. Християнська назва кельтського вузла - вузол Трійці.

З давніх давен різні варіанти кельтських вузлів використовували для прикрас та орнаментів. Самостійно їх виготовити зовсім нескладно. Пропоную переконатися в цьому.

Персонажі кельтської міфології

Своїх духів ірландці називають fairy «фейрі», звідси і видозмінена назва "фея". 

Фея - в кельтському фольклорі істота метафізичної природи, яка володіє надприродними здібностями, веде прихований спосіб життя і при цьому має властивість втручатись у повсякденне життя людини. Часто фею уявляють  як мініатюрну та привабливу жінку. 

Лепрекон традиційно уявлявся як невеликий чоловічок, часто з борідкою і капелюхом або ковпаком на голові, одягнутий у все зелене. Ірландці вірили, що лепрекони роблять взуття для фей та ельфів. Вважалось, що в цілому лепрекони — недружній народець, як до людей, так і між собою. Зазвичай, вони верткі і хитрі. Вважалось, що кожний лепрекон зберігає глечик із золотом, яке назбирав протягом тривалого часу. Лепрекони дуже непокояться через свої скарби.

Informal Letter Writing Practice

Write an e-mail. Follow the instructions:

You got an e-mail from your English-speaking friend where they described their school day. They want to know how a school day in Ukraine is organized. 

- Thank them for the information and tell them what surprised you about a school day in Britain.
