Step-by-step work with the video

Susan Vega "Tom's Diner"

Culture Reference
A diner is a small restaurant in the USA or Canada. Diners offer a wide range of foods, mostly American cuisine (hamburgers, french fries, club sandwiches), and a casual atmosphere. Thre is a combination of booths served by waiters and a long sit-down counter with direct service. Most diners have extended hours, and some, especially along highways, stay open for 24 hours.

What is Poetry? Who Knows?
Not a rose, but the scent of the rose;
Not the sky, but the light in the sky;
Not the fly, but the gleam of the fly;
Not the sea, but the sound of the sea;
Not myself, but what makes me
See, hear, and feel something that prose
Cannot: and what it is who knows?

(*from Eleanor Farjeon's Poems for Children, 1938)

- What is poetry compared to in this poem? Why does it make us see, hear and feel something that prose cannot?
