Happy Prince by Oscar Wilde - Картка самостійної роботи

This term we are going to read and discuss some of the books by the greatest British authors. Many of them are fairy tales which is a very popular genre in the English literature.
We start with Oscar Wilde's fairy tales. His collection of stories for children "The Happy Prince and Other Tales" was first published in May 1888. It contains five stories: "The Happy Prince", "The Nightingale and the Rose", "The Selfish Giant", "The Devoted Friend", and "The Remarkable Rocket". These tales are about such eternal things as love, fidelity and friendship.

Шановні студенти, що навчаються за індивідуальним графіком! Ці завдання є обов'язковими для опрацювання!

1. Read the story "Happy Prince" by Oscar Wilde. Copy out all the unknown words into your vocabularies.

2. Here's the story read by Stephen Fry. Listen to it as you reread the story. Prepare the reading of the extract below.

"One night there flew over the city a little Swallow. His friends had gone away to Egypt six weeks before, but he had stayed behind, for he was in love with the most beautiful Reed. He had met her early in the spring as he was flying down the river after a big yellow moth, and had been so attracted by her slender waist that he had stopped to talk to her.
'Shall I love you said the Swallow', who liked to come to the point at once, and the Reed made him a low bow. So he flew round and round her, touching the water with his wings, and making silver ripples. This was his courtship, and it lasted all through the summer".

3. Make up an outline of the story.
4. This cartoon is sure to touch your soul. Watch it and do the tasks in the worksheets suggested below.

The Carol of the Bells

Did you know that Shchedryk is the most famous Ukrainian song? Its English version is called Carol of the Bells.

There's a Wikipedia article devoted to this song which says it was composed by Ukrainian composer Mykola Leontovych in 1914 on the basis of the Ukrainian folk song. English lyrics were written by Peter J. Wilhousky in 1936.

Perhaps you remember hearing it while watching Home Alone.

Lyrics:
Hark how the bells,
sweet silver bells,
all seem to say,
throw cares away
Christmas is here,
bringing good cheer,
to young and old,
meek and the bold,
Ding dong ding dong
that is their song
with joyful ring
all caroling
One seems to hear
words of good cheer
from everywhere
filling the air
Oh how they pound,
raising the sound,
o'er hill and dale,
telling their tale,
Gaily they ring
while people sing
songs of good cheer,
Christmas is here,
Merry, merry, merry, merry Christmas,
Merry, merry, merry, merry Christmas,
On on they send, on without end,
their joyful tone to every home
Ding dong ding ding... dong! (Once again)

Weather Song for Primary School

Knowing weather vocabulary is extremely important for future primary teachers as pupils of 2nd and 3rd forms are already familiar with basic words and expressions. Discussing weather at the lesson can be boring but there are ways to make it fun such as using songs with movements. For example, "The Sun comes Up".
